Bubba Watson made it clear after Thursday’s first round of the Masters Tournament that his game was off until something finally clicked at No. 13.

Whatever clicked for Watson still felt right on Friday at Augusta National.

The UGA alum and two-time Masters champion, shot a 3-under-par 69 to move to 2 under for the tournament, good enough for a tie for eighth place with six others.

“There’s a couple putts here and there I wish I could have had back, but all-in-all it was a great day,” Watson said. “Any time you can shoot under par and in the 60s around this place you’re doing something right.”

Watson is still seven shots back of leader Patrick Reed, whose round of 66 round has him at 9 under for the tournament.

“I did (feel better Friday),” Watson said. “But I was really upset because the lead kept getting further and further away.”

Watson had back-to-back birdies on Nos. 2 and 3 before a bogey at No. 4. He then birdied Nos. 6 and 8 and, eventually, 13 to move to 4 under, but his approach at No. 15 came up just short and backed into the water. He managed to leave the hole with a bogey, but it was a missed opportunity.

“I thought I hit a great shot,” Watson said. “We’re all battling the same wind and it just kept switching, it felt like. Just like yesterday, but today it was just a faster speed; made it more violent.”

Watson finished his final three holes at par, including a sand save at the 18th that led to a 10-foot putt that found the bottom of the cup.

“Today I putted well,” Watson said, “and that’s what made my round very good.”
