After carding an opening-round 76, Patrick Reed didn’t filter his frustration.

“All-time high,” he said. “My frustration is at an all-time high.”

The Augusta State product began his round with a double bogey on No. 1 and added another bogey on No. 3. In all, Reed needed 36 putts in a round that only produced one birdie (No. 4).

“I gave myself a lot of opportunities and made absolutely nothing,” Reed said. “You can’t play this golf course and have 36 putts. I hit 13 greens, and had two iron shots that were just on the fringe, and had 36 putts.”

After playing the first three holes in 3-over, Reed settled down and was 2-over for the day heading to No. 17. However, the 26-year-old made consecutive bogeys on Nos. 17 and 18 to finish his round.

“I’m just about sick and tired of the year already,” Reed said. “I’m hitting the golf shots – I feel like I’m hitting quality shots. The ball just isn’t going in the hole. At the end of the day, I’d rather hit the ball horribly and have good scores than hit the ball (well) and shoot high numbers.”

In three Masters appearances, Reed’s best finish was a tie for 22nd in 2015. One reason for his struggles at Augusta National is due to his play on the closing hole.

“In my career,” Reed said of No. 18, “I’ve bogeyed that hole every time but twice in the time I’ve played here.”
