Late ace propels Wallace to Par-3 Contest title

5:30 p.m.: England's Matt Wallace nearly made his second hole-in-one of the day on No. 8, leading to a birdie on the third hole of a playoff to win the Par-3 Contest on Wednesday afternoon.

Wallace defeated fellow Briton Sandy Lyle in extra holes after the two finished at 5-under-par 22 for the day. UCLA amateur Devon Bling was 5 under through eight holes -- including his own ace on No. 7 -- but three-putted the final hole.

Lyle was trying for his third Par-3 title; he also won in 1997 and 1998.

4:40 p.m.: In the day's final grouping, England's Matt Wallace has made an ace on No. 8 to get to 3-under par for the day. It's the fourth hole-in-one of the day. Amateur Devon Bling is tied for the lead on the final hole. He'd be only the fourth amateur -- and first since Jay Haas in 1976 -- to win the Par-3 Contest.

4:10 p.m.: Amateur Devon Bling made a 1 on the seventh hole of the Par-3 Course, making it a third hole-in-one today. The UCLA student is now 4-under par through seven holes; Sandy Lyle remains in the lead with a score of 5-under 22.

2:35 p.m.: Shane Lowry has the second hole-in-one of the day, this one coming on No. 2. He lifted his young daughter, Iris, into the air in celebration at the tee box.

1:18 p.m.: 1998 Masters champion Mark O'Meara has made the first hole-in-one of the Par-3 Contest. O'Meara made his ace on No. 5.

12:05 p.m.: Augusta National and Masters chairman Fred Ridley didn't deliver any bombshells in his second "State of the Masters" address.

A year ago, Ridley announced the creation of the Augusta National Women's Amateur.

The main news Ridley delivered today was that the par-5 13th won't be lengthened anytime soon. He said the club will continue to monitor distances and will react from there.

A tunnel will be built under Washington Road near Gate 1 this summer, Ridley said. It will connect with a Global Broadcast Village that will be constructed there.

Ridley also praised the women's amateur, and said the club would continue to explore other avenues to grow the game.

There are no plans at this time to hold a women's professional event, Ridley said.
