Tom Watson will play with Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player during Wednesday’s Par-3 Contest, his son Michael confirmed Monday.

Last year, Ben Crenshaw played with Nicklaus and Player in the annual event. He replaced Arnold Palmer, who typically played with the other former Masters champions.

“It’ll be great watching him play with Player and Nicklaus,” Watson said after his father’s practice round. “That’ll be special for sure. I don’t know who’s caddying (for Watson) during the Par-3, but I plan on watching closely with my wife (Beth) and friends.”

Walking side-by-side, he watched as his father played Augusta National’s second nine – his final Monday practice round as a competitor. The two-time Masters champ is retiring as a Masters competitor.

“It’s a special experience – a special place,” Michael Watson said. “This obviously isn’t something I do every day, so to be able to walk alongside my dad is incredible. Just being able to bounce ideas off of him is amazing.”

As for how his father played Monday, Watson said, “He’s hitting it solid.

“He looks good right now,” Watson said. “The problem is he’s hitting clubs into greens that aren’t receptive to certain types of shots. It’s hard for him to challenge this course anymore.”

He caddied for his father at the 2010 Masters and says he’s been to Augusta National “four or five times.”

“Every time my number’s been called I’ve been here,” Watson said. “It’s a very special place for my father.”
