With more rain Wednesday and high winds expected Thursday and Friday, a veteran like Lee Westwood can turn to experience to guide him around Augusta National Golf Club this week.

The course’s conditions could change between windy and soft greens to calm, firm and fast by the weekend. Such drastic differences add importance to past rounds played during the tournament.

“Fortunately, I’ve played it a lot,” said Westwood, who has six top-10 finishes in 17 Masters Tournament appearances. “You don’t forget how to play it. You can have as many practice rounds as you want, but actually playing it competitively is very different. You learn a lot more in competition.”

Westwood, who tied for second in the 2016 Masters, said patience becomes a factor when conditions get difficult, such as dealing with the wind the first two tournament days.

“It certainly gets a lot trickier, so it becomes more of a battle out there and you try to limit your mistakes,” he said. “You try to play as well as you can, hit as many solid shots as you can and not miss it in the wrong spot. You basically grind out there.”
